[Truthout - All Articles] There are at this very moment 100,000 private contractors on the ground in Iraq charged with securing the activities of the Iraqi and American armies. Not only do these security companies cost taxpayers dearly, but this privatization of the military relieves governments at war of accountability, opens the door to crimes which those governments wash their hands of, enriches over-armed mercenaries, and consequently increases the risk of instability at a global level.

[Eurasia Review - Facebook Feed] European Responses To Obama's Middle East Policy | Analysis: The invasion was hugely divisive for Europe and in their eagerness to repair the rifts with Washington that emerged over the issue, the EU effectively stepped up cooperation with the US on the MEPP - notably in their stance on Hamas. As of Obama’s election, differences over Iraq and even the MEPP have ceased to be so problematic.

[News From Antiwar.com] Russia Moves Forward on Defense Missiles, Nuclear Plants for Iran ...: Do you actually not get it that Russia has delayed the Bushere plant again and again and again, and that it is precisely this that has stuck Iran with a stockpile of enriched uranium, and that it is precisly this stockpile that has been cited again and again and again as the primary public reason to suspect Iran of nefarious designs? Russia is playing a very brutal and cynical game with Iran, stringing Iran along with promises that are never fulfilled, while essentially CREATING the reason which Israel and the US manipulate as a reason for sanctions, and then coming back and throwing up their hands in the air, as they vote for sanctions, saying 'gee whiz, we can't help it, it's all because of the US and besides, Iran isn't being responsible'.

[Project Censored] Analysis of Project Censored: Are We a Left-Leaning, Conspiracy ...: The Clinton Administration and the Commerce Department have lobbied on behalf of U.S. toy and chemical manufacturers against proposed new European Union (EU) restrictions, which would prevent children’s exposure to toxic chemicals released by polyvinyl chloride (PVC) toys such as teething rings. Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), suggesting that the U.S. government lobbied at the behest of toymaker Mattel and chemical manufacturer Exxon, may help explain the European Commission’s rejection of the proposed emergency ban.

[America Magazine - In All Things] America Magazine: Mind you, the only rationale for Clark’s candidacy was that as a military man who had opposed the Iraq War as a strategic blunder, he could garner the anti-war vote without appearing weak on defense. No one looked at Clark as a viable candidate because he did his own taxes and, consequently, had special insights to the tax code.

[Opinio Juris] Opinio Juris » Blog Archive » The Civil War and the Blockade of ...: Further, I believe your binary belligerent-insurgent thesis is inaccurate.  Insurgents are not always “common criminals.”  It depends upon their level of organization and the intensity of hostilities.  If a stark belligerent-insurgent dichotomy existed, one in which the former entitles fighters to POW status and the latter just to prosecution for a domestic crime, there would be no need for the second protocol to the Geneva Conventions governing armed conflicts with or between sufficiently organized non-state groups.  That protocol does not discuss the concept of a POW, does not limit the use of blockades (or, more accurately, port closures), and creates certain minimal international legal obligations on all parties to a conflict within its terms.  Related to this event, it does, however, provide that:

[LobeLog.com] Tomgram: Juan Cole, Israel's Gift to Iran's Hardliners « LobeLog.com: The flotilla attack also gave the hardliners a foreign policy issue on which they could stand in solidarity with Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and the Arab world generally, reinforcing their cachet as champions of the Palestinians and bolstering the country’s regional influence.  There was even talk of sending a new Gaza aid flotilla guarded by Iranian ships.  Because Turkey, the aggrieved party, is at present a member of the Security Council, this fortuitous fillip for Iran has denied Obama the unanimity he sought on sanctions.  Finally, the incident had the potential to push international concern over Tehran’s nuclear enrichment program and that country’s new assertiveness in the Middle East into the background, while foregrounding Israel’s brutality in Gaza, intransigence toward the peace process, and status as a nuclear outlaw.

[Blogs For Victory] Rep. Mike Pence: We Will Stand Wiith Israel » Blogs For Victory: The modern state of Israel is a non-Semitic eastern European creation that recycled the biblical name for purely political reasons. Its situation in the Middle East is an artificial circumstance set in motion back around 1917 by the UK’s well-intended foreign secretary, Lord Arthur James Balfour, who actually had no right to the land of “Palestine”
