Iraq Reviews > Permanent Link to Oaklander, others arrested protesting Hillary in DC

http://www.ibabuzz.com/politics [Inside Bay Area > Political Blotter] CODEPINK cofounders Medea Benjamin of San Francisco and Jodie Evans of Venice, Calif., later Tuesday were detained by Capitol Police after interrupting a Senate Foreign Relations Committee nomination hearing for John Deputy Secretary of State nominee John Negroponte; they’d stood up and spoke out in objection to Negroponte’s alleged tolerance of Honduran death squads during his term as the U.S. Ambassador to that Central American nation from 1981 to 1985.

Kevin Dayhoff - Soundtrack Division of Old Silent Movies: This week’s segment featured the current director of national intelligence, John Negroponte, in a broad sweeping and illuminating discussion of his job, family, education and background, persistent leaks and other current events and topical issues. Writings on the wall: McConnell to be Director of National Intelligence is part of an effort by the Vice President to tighten the Administration’s grip on domestic intelligence and grease the wheels for a more aggressive stance towards Iran. Negroponte was willing to whitewash Honduran human rights abuses and work alongside William Casey channelling funds to the Contras under Reagan, but he baulked at the production of a National Intelligence Estimate which will support the case for an attack on Iran so he’s being replaced by someone more compliant. Gluemeat Gluemeat: Is it just me, or does this picture of US diplomat John Negroponte standing next to Picasso’s Guernica drip sardonicism? (via Cosmos)

Andrew: So, John Negroponte became deputy secretary of state last week. I've got a theory about that: The reason for the move is Condoleeza Rice is preparing to enter the presidential race. (via Cosmos)

Doug’s World: The change in death-squad John’s role is a two-birds-with-one-stone change. He brings his lifelong commitment to US-funded right-wing death squads to the table (ask Honduran peasant women about that), and also steps away from that messy business of aligning all the intelligence agencies. NION: His successor will need to accelerate that process in order to realize the vision of the intelligence reform legislation passed two years ago." Senator Rockefeller is much too kind in his statement about Negroponte, one of the worst Americans ever (Negroponte had a history of endorsing human rights violations and the murder of citizens in Central America in the 1980s under President Reagan.) Senator Rockefeller should have said: "Director Negroponte deserves a lot of blame for not starting the (via Cosmos)

SteveAudio: Negroponte is moving in to be in a position to take over for Rice, but not because Rice is going out of office, but up. Vice President Dick Cheney will resign due to much more plausible health problems (the poor guy has worn-out defibrillators, hasn't he?), and Dr. (via Cosmos)

Common Sense (Returning Reason to the Political and Social Conversation): I'm no fan of Big John here...he has a history of being in just out in front of sectarian death squads in war torn third world countries...so don't shed any tears at his leaving what should be an unbiased position. (A National Intelligence Director should tell a president what is real instead of fueling his boss's fantasy filled worldviews.) This move smells more like political manuevering than anything else, tossed into the the "Iraq Plan" so as to not make waves of its own. (via Cosmos)

Michellemalkin.comhttp://www.michellemalkin.com [Michellemalkin.com] Michelle Malkin: The ability of the US Border Patrol and the immigration authorities inside the USA to conduct effective immigration law enforcement operations was destroyed many years ago by the employers of illegal aliens through their political stooges, along with the very liberal ethnic and immigrant rights groups that are politically allied to the liberal Democrats, and some foreign governments, who have inordinate influence over the rules and regulations and make sure that they are designed to fail.

The survey results were described in an article in the journal "Foreign Affairs" by the organization's chairman, opinion research guru Daniel Yankelovich.

[Onemillionreasons.org] CODEPINK : CODEPINK Blogs from Washington D.C.: Andy spoke beautifully about re-prioritizing our aid to the Iraqi people, stressing that while the U.S. devotes much attention to the new constitution, the Iraqis' greatest self-proclaimed needs are food, electricity, water and day-to-day security. He also highlighted recent Zogby poll results that show 69% Shiia and 82% Sunni Iraqis supporting an IMMEDIATE withdrawal of U.S. troops within a specified timeline.

http://digbysblog.blogspot.com [Digbysblog.blogspot.com] Hullabaloo: In reading back over Hersh's articles of the last year or so, it became quite clear to me that this has something to do with the fact that Bush instituted the plan to invade Iran more than a year ago when he believed he had been crowned Emperor in the 2004 elections --- and that the plan has gone forward without any consideration of changing circumstances on the ground in Iraq. Furthermore, the plan itself comes from the same comic book from which Rummy and Newtie cooked up their RMA fantasy about invading Iraq with only 30,000 troops, a cell phone and a toothpick.
