Iraq Reviews > Pat Tillman Saw the Iraq War as Folly | Cato @ Liberty
[Cato @ Liberty] Tillman was a true citizen soldier. Not only did he leave private life to serve in the military after his nation was attacked, but he believed it was his responsibility to look beyond the self-serving rhetoric of politicians to judge the wisdom of the wars which they initiated. The rest of us should remember his skepticism when confronted with the willingness of politicians of both parties to continue sacrificing American lives in conflicts with little or no relevance to American security.

The upshot was that Tillman's .
[TBO Extra] TBOEXTRA.com :: Krakauer's new book examines Pat Tillman's death: The Tillman story is more deeply entwined in politics than Krakauer's previous books ” "Under the Banner of Heaven," "Into Thin Air," "Into the Wild" and "Eiger Dreams" ” but he doesn't see that as a departure. Politics are an essential part of the story, he says, just as religion and church power were essential parts of the story he told in "Under the Banner of Heaven," about Mormon polygamists.
[AlterNet] Inside Pat Tillman's Life, and the Bush Administration's Cover-Up ...: That Pat Tillman along with hundreds of thousands more on both sides have lost their lives was incidental and given short shrift from those that were more concerned with the money and power that they would receive! Even now as our soldiers are returning wounded body and soul, they are still being treated abominably by our government, due to "so called budget cuts" are still turning away our returning (children) veterans without many of the services they have earned!
[Firedoglake] Firedoglake » McChrystal's Afghanistan Report Leaked; Attempts to ...: Its just lovely that McChrystal has adopted the COINdinistas theories at least for public consumption but Im sure not about to forget what he did in Iraq and believe hes some kind of grand humanist. From all I can see, the COIN mantras are merely a great way to try to sell permanent wars against brown people to voters who might otherwise support funding health care over warfare.
[discovertexarkana.com] New book describes US football player-turned-soldier Pat Tillman ...: Tillman demonstrated an insightful understanding of where the military and politics mesh during the first days of the invasion of Iraq when he was assigned to a unit to release a female POW, Private Jessica Lynch, from an Iraqi hospital. Tillman watched as about a thousand troops were mobilised for the operation, including special forces, and concluded that the scale meant this was more than routine.
[The Washington Note] New York, Keith Olbermann and McChrystal's Afghanistan - The ...: The most serious allegations in the piece are detailed against Marc Grossman who had served as the Ambassador to Turkey before being named as the third-highest official at the State Department by the Bush Administration, where he is said to have "received money directly" for his work on behalf of Turkish agents. The article explains, in the most detail to date, Grossman's criminal involvement as the ring-leader for much of this, as first exposed in a January 2008 London Sunday Times front page story which described Grossman's activities but, due to British libel laws, didn't identify him by name.
[POLITICO.com: Politics] Obama 'skeptical' about more troops - Josh Gerstein - POLITICO.com: Obama had made a focus on the war in Afghanistan a central tenet of his foreign policy when he ran for president - often holding up the decision to invade Afghanistan, home to the 9/11 plotters, as the right move compared to President George W. Bush's .
[Zero Sum Mind] No One's Martyr « Zero Sum Mind: Jones revealed Army investigators were aware of the nature of Tillmans death days after the incident, yet senior officials still approved the awarding of the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and a posthumous promotion from Specialist to Corporal. The citation report accompanying these awards said Tillman was killed by enemy forces and contained a detailed description of a battle Army leadership knew had never taken place.
[NO QUARTER] Will Obama Surrender Afghanistan to the Mullahs? : NO QUARTER: The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warns in an urgent, confidential assessment of the war that he needs more forces within the next year and bluntly states that without them, the eight-year conflict “will likely result in failure,” according to a copy of the 66-page document obtained by The Washington Post.
Mudville Gazette: As a former officer in the 75th Ranger Regiment -- an elite unit whose leadership Krakauer skewers -- I might be expected to rise to the defense of the officers who made the decision to initially withhold the details of Tillman's death from his family and the public. But given the available evidence in both Krakauer's account and in numerous investigations, it appears that the otherwise competent commanders of the 75th Ranger Regiment and 2nd Ranger Battalion did indeed make a series of disastrous and incomprehensibly stupid decisions.
[Room for Debate] Over the Line in South Carolina - Room for Debate Blog - NYTimes.com: While racial issues don’t infest the state’s politics in the blatant way that they once did, they still matter more in South Carolina than perhaps anywhere else in the South. The dominant Republican Party has managed to hold together its fundamentalist, anti-government and Chamber of Commerce factions largely because there’s some underlying ” often unconscious ” sympathy between them on issues of race.
[NO QUARTER] Déjà Vu All Over Again: The Media Beats The War Drums For ...: The late Supreme Court justice Hugo Black believed that “paramount among the responsibilities of a free press was the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shots and shells.” Seven years ago, however, many elements of the mainstream media helped build a consensus for war against Iraq based on falsified intelligence and devious claims about weapons of mass destruction and Iraqi links to terrorism.

[NO QUARTER] Quote of the Day : NO QUARTER: Krauthammer was just too wrong about Iraq for me to consider his opinion seriously - plus he is unabashedly a propagandist for the GOP. He was not just wrong about Iraq and about the oil revenues we were going to get from there to pay for the war, but he would go on tv to state this as a fact.
