Iraq Reviews > Northern California Meeting on the Iraq War, the Peace Movement ...
[California Progress Report] The Presidential election will be fought out over the Iraq war -- and unless we work hard and smart, the antiwar movement will have very little to do with how the debate happens and the outcome. In fact, on November 5, the peace movement could find itself confused and directionless, despite having seen its activists throw themselves into electing a Democratic President.

[portland indymedia - newswire] ILWU to Shut Down West Coast Ports May 1 Demanding End to War in ...: In a major step for the U.S. labor movement, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has announced that it will shut down West Coast ports on May 1, to demand an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Middle East. In a February 22 letter to AFL-CIO president John Sweeney, ILWU International president Robert McEllrath reported that at a recent coast-wide union meeting, "One of the resolutions adopted by caucus delegates called on longshore workers to stop work during the day shift on May 1, 2008 to express their opposition to the war in Iraq."
[Tom's Big Picture] Paul and Huckabee: A Post-Mortem: The evangelical social conservatives delude themselves of their influence. About the only measurable difference they’ve made is starting a war with Iraq, half-convinced Saddam was the anti-Christ, even dusting off the Nostradamus to justify their pre-ordained conclusion. Devoid of hope and alienated from the culture of their country, much of Christian activism has become a rapture cult about as practically relevant as the Heaven’s Gate people out in California. For if all hope is pinned in the rapture, then if they are wrong about the rapture, the strategy is suicide. We have the Iraq War because the power elite (or rather the Likud wing of the power elite) wanted it for Israel, and American evangelicals served as the useful idiots to move it along. Witness Pat Robertson’s early endorsement of Rudy Giuliani, cross-dresser and supporter of gay rights and abortion, as an example of evangelicals’ decadence in their Israel Uber Alles delusions.
[A Collection ...of articles] Disaster Capitalism in the News: Hillary Clinton of New York, one of the two remaining contenders for the Democratic nomination, who they see as a better ally for the industry in the longer-term….According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Clinton leads in receiving donations linked to the defense industry with $143,433, versus $129,350 to McCain and $70,502 to Obama.”
[The Democratic Daily] Hillarys Stance on the Iraq War: “Of course, as it became obvious to Hillary and other Democrats who supported the wars authorization that the Iraq adventure was becoming a catastrophe, her tone and words changed, though later than many of her democratic colleagues.” Then he provides another direct quote from Hillary: “If I had known then what we know now, there would never have been a vote and I never would have voted to give the president the authority.”
[Art Threat] Iraq Vets Against the War organize the second Winter Soldier: Though the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are headed into their fifth year, a full-scale national mobilization and cultural upheaval seems unlikely, especially since soldiers today haven't been drafted. However, one has to maintain hope that gatherings such as this will fuel the public's fire to hold politicians and generals accountable for destroying countries, cultures, and lives.
[New West Notes] Non-Random Notes: New Legislative Leaders, Russian Media Mock ...: Hillary Clinton misstated the doctrine of nuclear deterrence, thought that Pervez Musharraf was running in the Pakistani parliamentary elections, claimed that she didn’t know that the Bush White House intended to invade Iraq when she voted to authorize the invasion of Iraq, and deferred to General Wes Clark on all the national security conference calls I was on.
[Mark12ministries's Weblog] A LETTER TO MY REPUBLICAN PRECINCT: 03-03-08: The loss of the House in the election of 2006 has demonstrated that the Conservative movement lacks dynamic leadership, has not clearly, forcefully, and attractively articulated a vision that the average American can joyfully grasp, and is failing to bring up a new generation of Conservative leaders and voters.
[Inside Charm City: Baltimore, Maryland blog] Reactions to Drop Drudge and the Prince Harry story: I’m a wee tad conflicted on the Harry end - I’m no great fan of the concept of having royals in general and would rather think of Harry Windsor as just another second lieutenant from a privileged background who will either turn out to be one of the good guys or one of the banes of the squaddies lives, depending on whether he has sh*t for brains or not. He gets no slack from me just for being a Windsor - but that said, kudos for going within a million miles of the shooting when he could’ve used his birthrate to stay safe in the UK.

[News Blog] Tom Lantos: Lantos was a well-known advocate on behalf of the environment, receiving consistently high ratings from the League of Conservation Voters and other environmental organizations for his legislative record.[11] His long-standing efforts to protect open space brought thousands of acres under the protection of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, including Mori Point, Sweeney Ridge and ” most recently ” Rancho Corral de Tierra, which will keep its watersheds and delicate habitats free from development permanently.[12][13] In 2005 he opposed an effort to expand public use of the Farallon Islands, a protected wildlife haven.
[Informed Comment] Iraq Still Central to Campaign; The Dark Side of McCain; Turkey ...: ' But as the war nears two grim milestones - five years since the invasion and nearly 4,000 Americans killed - the question of what to do in Iraq is never far below the surface. In California, where polls show 42 percent of Republicans and 91 percent of Democrats oppose U.S. policy in Iraq, strong anti-war sentiment gives the issue staying power.
[FORpeace - Peace & Community] February Peace News: United for Peace and Justice is calling for and supporting a set of activities on and around the 5th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq that will manifest the intensifying opposition to the war and help strengthen our movement. We hope this will be the largest day of nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience yet against the war in Iraq.
