[Needlenose] For the hawks who foisted the Iraq war on us, the invasion and occupation were all about imposing the will of the United States on that country, not to mention the rest of the Middle East. Some who opposed the war saw it through a similar American-centric prism, claiming that the horrific internal violence that followed was purely in response to U.S. imperialism.

[The Oil Drum - Discussions about Energy and Our Future] The Oil Drum | Iraq Could Delay Peak Oil a Decade: Basically, it's not just an issue of smoothing, it's that the basic assumptions that to me justify use of a logistic approximation - unconstrained production, fairly random search, fields small compared to total, aren't met in Iraq (well, the last two may be good enough, but the "unconstrained production" part is seriously violated when the infrastructure keeps being blown up every decade or so). Now, we might assume that in the future they will be much better met, and a logistic might be become more appropriate, but then we cannot use the past to give us any guidance on the height/width of the peak, even if we agree on the area under the curve.

[TPMCafe] Iran Nuclear Negotiations -- Same Imperialism, Different Day ...: My only qualm with your nice summation is you leave off the "nuclear-free Mideast" canard, which of course will never happen as long as Israel exists, whether Israel acknowledges its nukes or not. Of course we kinda sorta have Israel on a leash, so we're always holding Israel back from those unilateral pre-emptive strikes we hear about, when we're not planning our own unilateral pre-emptive strike (which the last time I heard seemed restrained only because we weren't sure we could knock out all suspicious sites in a wave of smart bombing - which would make a prospective target a) submit and lay itself open to invasion/destruction, or b) be more secretive and disperse suspicion across the land to deter a strike?
[Full Comment] Terry Glavin: Science fiction and Kandahar - Full Comment: KANDAHAR AIRFIELD - It might help to imagine this place as something out of a science-fiction movie, set in the distant future, on a desolate, searing-hot and faraway planet. More than 30,000 earthlings from 42 different countries are hunkered down in a vast and heavily-guarded mining colony in the middle of a windswept plain.
[Express Milwaukee] The Crushing Legacy of Bush and Cheney: Bush himself were distracted from the vitalnecessity of victory in Afghanistan—whichmeant not only driving out the Taliban but installing a real government intheir place—by their obsession with Iraq. Not only did the Al Qaedaleadership escape, but so did Mullah Omar, the leader of the Taliban, whoreturned to mount a threatening insurgency two years later, just as the BushWhite House and the Pentagon were declaring "mission accomplished" inBaghdad.
[Critical Times] Critical Times » End monopoly capitalism to arrest climate change: The destruction of the world’s forests has also led to the conversion of agricultural plantations for export-oriented crops, farms for cattle raising or monoculture tree plantations. The relentless extraction of mineral ores and wanton destruction by mining multinational corporations (MNCs) in Asia Pacific, Latin America and African countries that are naturally endowed with rich mineral deposits persists while they leave massive environmental destruction and pollution, widespread landlessness and displacement, loss of livelihood, distortion of local culture, and rampant human rights violations to the peoples of these regions in their wake.
[MyDD] Obama Surge War Porn: The result of this imperialist policy, authored by then-national security adviser and current foreign policy adviser to Obama, Zbigniew Brzezinski, has been three decades of war, civil war and social devastation. Independent of motive, it is also quite unlikely that helping Afghans will be the unintended result of our ongoing war there.
[Pajamas Media] Pajamas Media » Iran's Script to Get the Bomb: Obama’s indifference to the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people is evidence of his indifference not only to democracy (an indifference which is obvious in his denigration of the US Congress)…but his ignorance about the vital role democracy could play in weakening the imperialist intentions of Iran.
[Workers World news online] Behind the election ploy in Afghanistan: for the control of Central Asia by theenergy- and resource-hungry transnational corporations behind imperialist wars. Karzai was a CIA contact during U.S. imperialism’s first warin Afghanistan, when Washington built an army out of the landlords’resistance to the Afghan revolution of 1978.
[CNN Political Ticker] CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive ...: I think it is interesting that the current administration is looking at the American public to offset OBlunder's desire to simply vote "Present". If they don't raise enough tax money and the war fails, it has nothing to do with the Grovelor-in-Chief being totally inept as CIC, it has everything to do with he didn't have enough money to do what he needed to do and if anyone is to blame for the shortcoming it is going to be the citizens of the country.

[Jeremy Rosen's Blog] Jeremy Rosen's Blog: Get Out of Iraq: When the current Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, came to the United States, he first went to the United Nations, where he declared that Iraq supported Hezbollah against the Zionist enemy and would immediately send millions of dollars in aid. This so incensed many American Congressmen and Senators that they threatened to boycott his address in Washington.
[The Online Magazine Formerly Known As Rob's Blog] The Online Magazine Formerly Known As Rob's Blog: What ever ...: It's amazing how many people are fooled by the claims of the Neo-Conservative Republicans to be superior "Christians", when there is practically nothing of the teaching or example of Jesus Christ in the policies or behavior of these political and/or religious people. These self proclaimed "model Christians" are not following Jesus Christ, any more than are the leaders of the so-called "Christian Identity Church" or the "Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan".
