Iraq Reviews > Misdirected Anger: Don’t Call Troops Baby Killers

http://hammeroftruth.com [Hammer of Truth - Libertarian Blog] Now, I’m avidly against the late Vietnam war and the current Iraq war (yet, I fully agree with using military force to retaliate and hunt down Osama in Afghanistan and wherever he is), but I think once you start throwing around blanket statements about the morality of our military troops, you are treading into dangerous territory. Back during Vietnam, one of the greatest blunders of the anti-war movement was to greet returning troops with spit and name-calling.

Troy O'Donley, a Walter Reed patient on hand for the pro-am, said it makes sense that Mickelson and other pro golfers would be grateful to combat veterans. "I'm sure they appreciate what we do," he said, "because they wouldn't be able to play golf if we didn't have the military services we do today, and the heroes that put their lives on the line, and the people that have given their lives for the country."

While some remained adamantly pro-war, one-third of the population had learned things that overthrew previously held ideas about the essential goodness of the American intervention in Vietnam. The human consequences of the fierce bombing campaigns, the "search and destroy" missions, became clear in the image of the naked young girl, her skin shredded by napalm, running down a road; the women and children huddled in the trenches in My Lai with soldiers pouring rifle fire onto them; Marines setting fire to peasant huts while the occupants stood by, weeping.

It's keeps mentioning Bob Hope and Vietnam and is careful to bring up race and gender. (The USO performers are all white males except for the obligatory eye candy.)

http://pudentilla.blogspot.com [Pudentilla.blogspot.com] Pudentilla's Perspective: Pudentilla wrote a long post on February 21, 2004 on this topic. The recent Newsweek story, titled, G.I.’s Don’t Have The Gear They Need To Stay Alive, suggests that aWol and his Merry Men and Maids persist in their lack of support for the troops. This legitimate point of criticism has gained greater political urgency since aWol and his Merry Men and Maids argue that any criticism of aWol or his record as "war president" gives aid and comfort to the enemy and fails to support the soldiers.

[Iraqwarnews.net] Iraq War Today: Bangor, ME (PRWEB) June 8, 2005 -- The Maine Troop Greeters, an informal group of veterans and civilians dedicated to welcoming our military men and women as they pass through Bangor International Airport in Bangor, Maine, proudly announce their newly formed alliance with Soldier’s Angels. The main goal of the Maine Troop Greeters is to honor the troops for the job they are doing and to acknowledge and show gratitude for the sacrifice each service member and their family are making. The Maine Troop Greeters are honored to meet and greet our military troops regardless of the weather or time of night and to date have welcomed close to 200,000 troops.

http://www.dykesdodigital.org [Dykesdodigital.org] dykes do digital » White House bans news coverage of coffins ...: For American working people, the deaths of these young men and women is a terrible tragedy and waste. These soldiers, like the American people as a whole, were dragged into an illegal war based on lies about nonexistent weapons of mass destruction and Baghdad-terrorist connections that were invented to cover up the Bush administration’s predatory objectives. They have been kept in Iraq nearly seven months after the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime under conditions of rising popular hostility to what is plainly an exercise in US colonialism.
