The American military considers the region a crucial strategic approach to Baghdad, with important highways running south to the holy city of An Najaf and the oil center of Basra, but it has never been able to establish control in the region.

There weren't a huge number of My Lai type incidents in Vietnam either, but the reported incidents served to fuel hatred and stiffen up resistsnce, in much the same way that reports of things like the "Long March" enraged American soldiers in the WWII era, or German atrocities caused the people of the USSR to overlook the Stalinist excesses and dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to punishing the German occupiers.
