[Iraq Today] He made this transparently clear by adding a signing statement to the defense appropriation bill, indicating that he would not be bound by the law’s prohibition against expending funds: “(1) To establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing for the permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq,” or “(2) To exercise United States control of the oil resources of Iraq.”

[Brave New Films blog] Video: Proposed Focus of Congressional Hearings on Afghanistan and ...: As Obama inherits Bush’s wars, this is an important moment for Congress to assert a new role in critical oversight and not repeat the dysfunctional deadlocks between the executive and legislative branches which led to so much secrecy, false accounting and mismanagement in Iraq. If the current Congress actively pursues oversight and insists on transparency and accountability, the media, interested public and peace movement will have the information necessary to play their critical functions in wartime.

[Hot Air » Top Picks] Hot Air » Blog Archive » “How dare you?” Fleischer and Matthews ...: Chris, if your monday morning QBing had its way Lybia and Syria would have WMDs today, in addition to a stregnthened Saddam Hussein and a completely impotent and worthless United Nations with its toothless Resolutions .Especially nice: when Matthews tried to turn the war into Iraq into the Bush administration believing that anyone we didnt like was grounds for a war, and Fleischer nailed him with the question about whether we had gone to war with Libya, .
[Dave's Part] In defence of the Luton Islamist demo: the right to be provocative ...: Thankfully, you have ended on an explicitly utilitarian point: "watch them deliver further tens of thousands of votes to the British National Party in their efforts to pick up two or three recruits." Now this seems perfectly consistent with your complaint about far left factions putting forward "formally correct" resolutions, but very rapidly a discrepancy becomes visible. The true objection against such actions (by far left factions) is the inappropriateness of the context - not in an offensive way, but in a 'what-was-the-point-of-that?' way.

His Government strongly supported the process of review of Security Council decisions pertaining to Iraq after resolution 661 of 1990 that represented a key step in the support of the international community's efforts to normalize relations between Iraq and its neighbours and contribute to the security and stability in the region.

We’re told that this is a cynical era, but there was nothing cynical about Katharine Gun’s response to the memo that appeared without warning on her desktop.

[AfterDowningStreet.org - Bush-Cheney Trials in 09] Signing Statementing Our Way to Empire | AfterDowningStreet.org: . Section 7050 in Division H prohibits the use of certain funds for the use of the Armed Forces in United Nations peacekeeping missions under the command or operational control of a foreign national unless my military advisers have recommended to me that such involvement is in the national interests of the United States. This provision raises constitutional concerns by constraining my choice of particular persons to perform specific command functions in military missions, by conditioning the exercise of my authority as Commander in Chief on the recommendations of subordinates within the military chain of command, and by constraining my diplomatic negotiating authority. Accordingly, I will apply this provision consistent with my constitutional authority and responsibilities.
[LiberalOasis : The Blog] LiberalOasis: Aggressive government intervention with strong public dividend and then a return to more transparent private control is in keeping with the "Swedish Way." In the 1990s Communitarian "stakeholder" rhetoric enjoyed some popularity. But stakeholder strategies in the United States have never real gone beyond addressing things like graffiti.
[Counterterrorism Blog] Counterterrorism Blog: The Myth of the Two Talibans: Following these statements a flurry of comments exploded throughout the international media: while most of the mainstream press and networks in the West praised the “new daring turn” in US policy, that is, the readiness to “engage the Taliban,” most of the pan Arabist and Jihadi sympathizer outlets in the region warned the move wont be successful. In a panel discussion on BBC TV Arabic in which I participated, a noted expert in Islamist affairs from Amman said “there is no such thing as Taliban independent from the high ups like Mullah Umar.” Another panelist, a seasoned Afghan journalist from Kabul added: “In Iraq, you have a bigger US force, and a totally different geopolitical context than in Afghanistan.
[Johnblakey's Weblog] Sun glorious sun « Johnblakeys Weblog: This is like saying it is hypocritical to condemn the mass terrorism of 9/11 and 7/7 and the Madrid and Bali bombings - or, for that matter, the hundreds of acts of suicide terrorism that have killed thousands of Iraqi civilians, if you dont agree with Mr Brownes position on Iraq, Shannon and Lisbon.
[CNN Political Ticker] CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive ...: Bush a free hand and blank checks to do as he pleased is a big cost of the economic problem that the American people are facing now. Because of nothing more than pure negation of jobs, education, health, and the infrastructural of the United States of America is another reason America has such the economic problem it has today.
[The Note] The Note: The Note, 2/27/09: Iraq Roll: Might a war strategy help ...: Socialism!" But, when you read about it in more depth you realize its just a roll back of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 1%, and its honest about the cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars (Bush left those costs out of the budget). It's amazing to think we are on the path to universal healthcare, and I can only believe that has to HELP small businesses for whom health insurance is a major cost.
[CNN Political Ticker] CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive ...: Bush fueled post 9/11 fear and anxiety coupled with a faulty connect the dots argument based on false intelligence to trick us into goin to war, just as Obama has fueled fear and anxiety over the cureent recession to advance the Democratic party's surrealistically bloated spending proposals. Pelosi has zero credibility ith me, and a good deal of the american people.
[The Field on the Narcosphere] The Field: Out of Iraq: But what about Afghanistan? Obama's making good on that other campaign promise - to send tens of thousands more troops into the country. During the campaign he said the current strategy of "just air-raiding villages and killing civilians" doesn't work. That's a remark you'd never hear from another mainstream politician, like mentioning "capitalism," so kudos. But then he said this is in part why we need more troops on the ground in Afghanistan. I've yet to see any independent expert analysis that a military "surge" in Afghanistan will work (to the contrary, they're saying it could make things worse). The country has been notoriously resistant to foreign intervention for decades, the latest U.S. occupation being no exception...
