[openDemocracy] The former prime minister will need to justify his style of government, which, from the informal decision-making, to the secret memos, to the only sporadic consultation with cabinet ministers, been exposed in a damning light by the Chilcot inquiry. Blair will need to answer questions about the presentation of the case for war and in particular why he deemed the September 2002 dossier on Iraq's weapons was 'beyond doubt.' He will also need to explain his post-invasion plan and more importantly, explain the timing of his decision to support a military invasion by the US.

Turnbull similarly wanted to have it both ways, claiming that, although the ministerial code required the full version of legal advice to be shown to ministers, legal advice with caveats was traditionally not presented to the Cabinet.

There has also been a lot of focus on the intelligence which suggested Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi dictator, was in possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), which was one of the reasons cited for the invasion.

A failure to do so would lead to speculation that there is indeed something to hide and that the Iraq Enquiry has been politically influenced by showing alleged favouritism to the PM.

[Ephems of BLB » Ephems] Ephems of BLB » Blog Archive » Alastair Campbell at the Chilcot ...: Of course it’s possible that in Mr Campbell’s secret talks the French took an irrevocably negative position, totally different from that defined by their President publicly on 10 March, indeed so negative as to justify Washington and London in embarking on a ferocious military attack on and invasion of Iraq without a vestige of authority from the Security Council as required under international law.  But that seems, on the face of it, rather unlikely.  And if the position of France was that defined in the Chirac television interview, Mr Campbell really ought to stop using France as an excuse for an action that was unwarranted, illegal, in breach of our Charter obligations, unnecessary, premature, opposed by much of the world including some of our closest allies and partners — and without question not the last resort.

[News] Iraq inquiry: Alastair Campbell sets himself up for a fall ...: Reading some comments, it would appear Mr Cambell is not convincing the public he is telling the truth, it appears to me these enquiries are carried out with the express intention of ensuring no blame is laid at the feet of any of the perpetrators of the rush to insanity which invading Iraq has proven to be, I also wonder if there is any truth in the story circulating, that supporters of Mr Blair are selling tickets for his forthcoming appearance, the price quoted apparently is £10,000 per ticket, this seems a rather paltry sum for the opportunity to witness a silvertongued saint tying up a genteel committee in obfuscation and untruths, no doubt that shiny halo will blind them to a man.
