Iraq Reviews > Coup and counter-coup: The struggle for Iraq
[Israpundit] The speculation is that Allawi will use the armed forces to seize power and topple the stubborn Jaafari, who insists on staying in power (he was premier in the previous administration) although he has lost support of everybody around him, including the Americans, the British, the Sunnis, the Kurds, the seculars and some of the Shi’ites in his own United Iraqi Alliance (UIA). His only remaining supporters are the Da’wa Party, which he heads, and the rebel-cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad is reportedly campaigning to either dump the United Iraqi Alliance's (UIA) candidate for
[Unqualified Offerings] Deep Shiite: Chiarelli stood by the U.S. account, disputed by Sadr aides and other Shi”ite leaders but which is broadly in line with police reports and some local witnesses who spoke of a fierce gun battle around the site.
[Stress] America Switches Sides in Iraq War: It always seemed to me that the empowering of Iran was accidental, as the US completely underestimated the power of Ayatollah Sistani to demand direct elections, and that Bush/Cheney would never let them get away with it. It is just another reason to bomb Iran, though I wondered how our government thought they could get away with bombing Iran while the US army is surrounded by Iran-loyal Shi’ite militias who have tolerated the US presence so far and been the major recipients of American training and weapons.
[Today in Iraq] DAILY WAR NEWS FOR THURSDAY, March 9, 2006 ... : : With the US President George Bush's approval ratings hitting new lows with the bottom no where in sight, Iran about to open the first oil bourse priced in Euros on March 20th, 2006 in Teheran, the US Federal Reserve stopping to publish M3 figures (the most reliable indicator on the amount of dollars circulating in the world) only three days later from March 23, 2006 onward, the by-now-familiar pattern of bullying Iran into submission on its nuclear program well on the way, Britain saying that Iran is only months away from a nuke, US Vice President Dick Cheney and America's rep to the UNO John Bolton threatening Iran with all available means from AIPAC forum and the beleaguered Iranian ambassador retorting back with 'let the ball roll', I have distinct feeling of déjà vu.
[Shining Light In Dark Corners] US Playing the Sunni Card in Iraq: US Playing the Sunni Card in Iraq It would appear that Bush is finally listening to some people who know what they are talking about. Perhaps with the help of Zalmay Khalilzad, the US ambassador to Iraq, perhaps the most competent person involved in Iraq for the Bush Administration, the US can do something about the freight train headed towards a
[Xymphora.blogspot.com] xymphora: The AIPACers weren’t journalists, and allegedly passed on classified information which they knew to be classified regarding an enemy of the United States, information which could have resulted in the loss of lives of American government employees, to an Israeli intelligence agent. If that is protected free speech, the only case in which the United States could prosecute an espionage case is where the spy had signed some kind of loyalty oath (that would probably catch such cases as Ames and Pollard, but their lawyers might want to revisit the issue).
[Washingtontimes.com] In support of Iraqi Shi'ites - Editorials/Op-Ed - The Washington ...: This is an important factor to keep in mind in assessing the likelihood of Iraqi Shi'ites joining en masse with the Iranian regime to betray their own country. Although Shi'ites suffered horribly under Saddam Hussein, they died by the thousands fighting for Iraq (and by extension, for Saddam) against the Ayatollah Khomeini during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.
[Juancole.com] Informed Comment : 03/01/2004 - 03/31/2004: With regard to the Sunnis, AFP reports ' At Baghdad's conservative Sunni neighborhood of Aadhamiyah, Sheikh Ahmed Hassan Taha al-Samarrai, told worshippers at Abu Haneefa Mosque that Yassin was "the beating heart of the struggle in Palestine." "Despite the fact that the late Sheikh Yassin was a disabled old man who could not move .he made the Crusaders -- the US administration -- and its masters (the Jews) feel anxious." At the Umm al-Tubul mosque in southeast Baghdad, Sunni Sheikh Abdel Sattar al-Janabi, said: "The Jews who killed Sheikh Yassin in Palestine are the same group who are killing the Iraqis."
