Iraq Reviews > Britain's Inquiry into the Iraq War and the Israel Lobby Taboo

[Wake Up America!] Specifically, Professor Mearsheimer and I made it clear in our article and especially in our book that the idea of invading Iraq originated in the United States with the neoconservatives, and not with the Israeli government. But as the neoconservative pundit Max Boot once put it, steadfast support for Israel is ”˜a key tenet of neoconservatism.’ Prominent neo-conservatives occupied important positions in the Bush administration, and in the aftermath of 9/11, they played a major role in persuading Bush and Cheney to back a war against Iraq, which they had been advocating since the late 1990s.

[Journal] AlisonWeir.org - Journal - Britain's Inquiry into the Iraq War and ...: press in the UK and even in the US that testimony at the Inquiry revealed that Blair and Bush had agreed upon military action against Iraq as early as April 2002 though this decision on war was never revealed to the US people or to Congress. In fact, the October 11, 2002 Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq did not expressly spell out war and President Bush claimed at that time that it was not a mandate for war but could be used to bring about a solution by peaceful means.

[Pajamas Media] Pajamas Media » Tony Blair's Feisty Defense of His Iraq War Policy: Blair, unlike his bigoted wife who is thoroughly anti Israel and anti Semitic, seems to be a fair minded, common sense, and up to date individual who is willing to let facts and logic inform his judgement rather than his personal biases and desires. I believe that it was these qualities as well as a personal warmth towards regular people that made his leadership so effective and popular with the British public, and which I hope and pray will make him a fair and just Middle East envoy for the European Union.

[www.questionsandanswersonline.com] Why are Americans against keeping US troops in Iraq indefinitely ...: Yes, Murtha is a Democrat who is also a known Conservative who supported Bush43’s invasion of Iraq based on lies and miscalculations and now he thinks( upon the advice of many military generals)we have made too many mistakes to continue staying in Iraq. So what?

[Aletho News] Behind the Drive to War « Aletho News: The Institute played a key role in promoting Ahmed Chalabi’s group of Iraqi exiles, the Iraqi National Congress (INC), as a major Iraqi opposition force “that would be welcomed by the Iraqi people as an alternative to the regime of Saddam Hussein” once the Untied States overthrew that regime. “From 1998 on, when there was U.S. government money openly available to support the Iraqi opposition to Saddam Hussein due to the AEI-backed Iraqi Liberation Act, Chalabi’s INC grabbed the bulk of the funding.” In return, the INC, working closely with the AEI, played an important role in the justification of the invasion of Iraq.

Mudville Gazette: At the briefing today, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about Biden calling Iraq one of the great potential achievements of the Obama administration given that Biden had previously advocated that the country should be divided into thirds and split among Kurds, Shiites, and Sunnis, and then-Sen. Obama opposing the surge of US troops that many experts argue helped bring stability that allowed the reconciliation process to continue.

[openDemocracy] Iraq and the fig-leaf of just war theory | openDemocracy: Blair in particular, could be held accountable for war crimes as a result of an illegal war based on the crime of aggresion underpinned by the prinicples of 'just war' (and I suppose) a moral code, one which puts the uniquenesss of a human life to fulfil its potential, something that has a right to be protected from an un-invited potential fatal harm.

[lebanon NEWS أخبار لبنان] Hariri's assassination, five years on « lebanon NEWS أخبار لبنان: Up until that time, the United States had been ambivalent towards Syria’s occupation of Lebanon, mostly due to  Syria’s status as an “ally” during America’s first encounter with Iraq in 1991. But in 2003, America and Syria were not on what one would call  friendly terms (due to Syria’s close relationship with Iran, and its hostile relationship towards Israel), and when America invaded Iraq, Damascus saw that if there was a quick success in toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein, then the Assad regime could be next.

[Andrew Bolt] It was Obama what won Iraq | Herald Sun Andrew Bolt Blog: The crippled economy was further battered by prolonged and sometimes simultaneous strikes by physicians, teachers, students, truck owners, copper workers, and the small business class. On 26 May 1973, Chile’s Supreme Court, which was opposed to Allende’s government, unanimously denounced the Allende disruption of the legality of the nation.

[Stephen M. Walt] Blair, Bush, Israel and Iraq | Stephen M. Walt: He mentioned the "Israel issue" in the context of the considerations in going to war, but that could just as easily refer to the effect launching the war would have on other Mideast peace prospects (his comments suggest they were concerned with broader Mideast issues) and how it would "play" in the rest of the region, as well as whether there would be a repeat of attacks on Israel as a result of a coalition attack against Iraq, and what to do with Israel in terms of its potential response. THAT would be a more logical interpretation of what Blair meant and why he and Bush would consult with the Israelis, i.e., to make sure they would play ball in terms of staying on the sidelines as they did in Gulf War I and thereby avoid turning the opinion of other Arab states against the U.S./British efforts.

[FrumForum] Andrew Sullivan and the Jews | FrumForum: If you want to say that the US gave Saddam money and weapons, that much is true, but trying to portray the relationship as a patron-client one is utterly false. Note also that the US was (more secretly) courting Iran with gifts as well, hence the Iran-Contra scandal.

[Mondoweiss] Judt was first to get both barrels of anti-Semitism innuendo from ...: .” Not to outdone, two weeks later Benjamin Netanyahu wrote in the WSJ that Saddam Hussein was “feverishly trying to acquire nuclear weapons” and that while it was possible to eliminate the Iraqi nuclear threat 20 years by way of surgical strike, as the IAF had done in 1981, “[t]oday nothing less than dismantling his regime will do.” Ominously, Netanyahu wrote the piece “as a citizen of the country that is most endangered by a pre-emptive strike. For in the last gasps of his dying regime, Saddam may well attempt to launch his remaining missiles, with their biological and chemical warheads, at the Jewish state.”

[Jaluo] THE BALANCE OF TERROR at Jaluo Africa, World, News, Politics ...: Weeks before the mayhem, under US pressure, Iraq was forced to destroy much of her critical weapons, including missiles she could have used to defend herself against the US aggression. The US unleashed thousands of their most lethal bombs on airports, roads, hospitals, schools, civil institutions and facilities, to turn Baghdad into a wasteland, killing and maiming thousands of innocent citizens, including women and babies, in the guise of searching for the non-existent weapons of mass destruction.

[Cuthulan's Blog] Milliband another LIAR ,just how stupid do these people think we ...: One would have thought the public had heard enough of history being rewritten to suit politicians when Tony Blair appeared at the Iraq Inquiry and, among other things, pushed the old, discredited conflation of Al Qaeda, 9/11 and Iraq. Presumably he still thinks that if he utters an untruth often enough people will believe him.

[The American Spectator and AmSpecBlog] The American Spectator : Andrew Sullivan's Island: It's very difficult to square this epiphany -- which he claims as a central aspect of his break with modern conservatism -- with his rather draconian proposal to have U.S. troops invade Israel in order to impose a two-state solution that neither side has agreed to. He might recall, for instance, that the British had a pretty "awful time" occupying Palestine before the establishment of a Jewish state, and it's fair to say that the divisions between Israelis and Palestinians are quite deep.

[Medarabnews] Medarabnews » Blog Archive » Syria, Israel and Lebanon. Caught ...: On the other hand, not only the Syrians, but the Arabs as a whole, believe that Israelis are not seriously set on solving the Palestinian Question for the time being. In the eyes of many, the attempt to resume talks with Syria (a dubious and uncertain move in itself not supported unanimously by the Israeli government) seems to be an instrumental maneuver aimed solely at drawing Damascus away from Iran and further isolating the latter.
