Iraq Reviews > An 'Islamic civil war' in Iraq? - By Tom Ricks | The Best Defense

[The Best Defense] I wish Tom Ricks, who is an excellent reporter when he hasn't already made up his mind what is going to happen, would evaluate these possibilities, even if it disrupts the clarity of the "Iraq unravelling" message he decided on many months ago. Or if it precludes quoting from newsletters with an "edgy, executive" writing style.

[The Best Defense] Fukuyama on Iran and China - By Tom Ricks | The Best Defense: In the long run, after passions cool the whole unhappy American adventure in Iraq and Afghanistan (and perhaps Iran) will be looked at as unfathomably stupid. The wasted lives and treasure will be seen as having accrued nothing of value to America’s long range strategic position but will be seen as possibly the culminating moment of American post-war power projection.

[The Stump] When did we sign up for a war without end? | OregonLive.com: He has pledged to remove all U.S. troops from Iraq by 2012, differing from those like Ricks who predict continuing combat, resulting in a Korean-style occupation. Obama also pledges to "begin" American troop withdrawals from Afghanistan by summer 2011, in contrast to those who demand we remain until an undefined victory.

[The Best Defense] Gates vs. the services | The Best Defense: Fifth, Ricks does a thing that shows complete unfamiliarity with the heartbeat and life of the Academies: he tries to separate the Graduates from their Academies by saying the Grads are "crackerjack" but the schools are "community colleges" -- meant to mean, "second or third rate." So he insults Community Colleges too :) Most Academy grads strive to embody the values of their Academy in their lives. Ricks, unaware of this, shows a kind of insulting ignorance.

[FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right] FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right: The Tea Pauliers: Nor is it particularly illuminating even if you accept it as true, because people who loved Paul weren't necessarily enamored of the man, but simply found him to be a decent conduit for general sentiments. This is just a lame attempt to paint the Tea Party movement as kookier than it actually is by setting Paul (and whatever crazy things he's said in the past) as its de facto spokesman.

[TomDispatch - Blog] Tomgram: The Dictionary of American Empire-Speak | TomDispatch: The structures brought home a sad realization: It's simply unrealistic to believe that the U.S. military will be able to pull out of the Middle East It was a week when U.S. forces had engaged in combat in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan -- a string of countries stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean -- following in the footsteps of Alexander the Great, the Romans and the British."

[RevolutionRadio.org] The Son Also Rises: What set Ron Paul apart from most Republicans, though, was his passionate opposition to the Iraq war and to the GOP's interventionist foreign policy. Here Rand Paul is careful to tailor his arguments in ways that appeal to more .

[Walter Russell Mead's Blog] Jet Lag and Blogging Don't Mix - Walter Russell Mead's Blog - The ...: We are nearing some mileposts here at the blog.  The end of March will mark six months of blogging.  At our present pace, we’ll reach 500,000 hits sometime before then.  That’s a much greater response than I ever expected.  Thanks to all those who have linked to my posts or checked in from time to time.  And finally, very soon the comments on the blog will outnumber the posts by a factor of ten to one.  That means a lot to me.  It means that readers are finding this an interesting place and a useful service.  Even when the comments are critical of yours truly, I appreciate that you take the time to make them.  And to those of you who send encouragement and support, thanks!  It means more than you know.

[Foxborough Universalist Church] Foxborough Universalist Church » BEV: March 2010 Newsletter Highlights: In the midst of our aspirations for our church to serve as a center for spiritual growth and our urgency to provide needed and relevant care to our community, I hope that we can stop every now and then and recognize what we have accomplished together. As we move into the spring, I’m so excited about what’s on our immediate horizon: welcoming more new people and their ideas and talents, having our middle schoolers participate in the OWL program, getting a couple of good social outreach ideas off the ground, and completing the strategic plan that will take us forward as we try to “grow in our ability to fulfill the mission of the church.”
