[IceViking] Surviving "disengagement"-Israel, civil disobedience and the higher law: Second, the Agreement contravenes the universally binding obligation to punish egregious acts of criminality, an obligation known jurisprudentially as Nullum crimen sine poena, "No crime without a punishment." The first contravention is expressed lucidly, inter alia, by Thomas Jefferson in his "Opinion on the French Treaties" (April 28 1793): "The nation itself, bound necessarily to whatever its preservation and safety require, cannot enter into engagements contrary to its indispensable obligations." The second contravention, which is founded upon Israel's illegal entry into diplomatic agreement with a terrorist organization, is discussed more fully by this author in: Louis Rene Beres, ISRAEL'S SURVIVAL IMPERATIVES: THE OSLO AGREEMENTS IN INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL STRATEGY, Ariel Center for Policy Research, Israel: Policy Paper No. 102, 2000, 110 pp;
[Iraqi Bloggers Central] FEAR AND IRAQIS: A COMMENTARY: No wonder, Iraqis and others Middle Eastern people are not accepting fully their responsibilities as "adults", instead they complain and use scapegoats like Israel and the US as a justification for their own misery. It also suits the over controlling and micro-managing leaders of the Middle East, that their people turn their hostility outwards rather than reform their own states.
[Res Ipsa Loquitur] Anti-War Journalists: is counterproductive in the sense that, as a part of the "War on Terror", our actions in Iraq replicate... going back to my critique of May's California Patriot.
[Gideon Strauss] Peace and violence So that my less attentive re...: A quick note to advance the discussion: Before discussing the more particular issue related to the jus ad bellum regarding the current war, or any war, (or any internal police action for that matter) we have to get straight the more fundamental issue regarding the role and obligations of the state in employing force, coercion or violence more generally (or normatively). I would also ask Byron to clarify distinctions between the terms "force," "coercion" and "violence." It would seem to me the the fundamental issue is over the permissibility or the obligation of the state to use (or threaten) "lethal force" or lethal coercion" or, if you will "lethal violence." Byron seems to be saying that the state may permissibly use less-than-lethal force, violence or coercion.

[Blog.zmag.org] Word from the Wise: Iraq and the "war on terror" Archives: For anyone still inclined to give even an iota of credibility to the claim of US policy makers that we are interested in "liberating" people from oppression--be they Iraqi or whatever else--here is an interesting piece about our commitment to democracy in the torture-terror regime of Azerbaijan...Since the Aliyev dictatorship is supporting the war on Iraq, and because of their potential strategic importance in the oil economy, they naturally get a free pass on their human rights abuses. More than a free pass, in fact...they get increased assistance even as they engage in a pattern of horrific practices against the nation's citizenry.

[Austinbay.net] Austin Bay Blog » Technology, Liberty, and Terror: the weeks ...: If they know that Bush will be there for four more years, with a mandate from the American people (earned after a campaign of unprecedented personal and political vilification by those who opposed the liberation of Iraq), decisions in Syria, Iran, North Korea and other places (including France and Germany) are going to be different.
