Permanent Link to Oaklander, others arrested protesting Hillary in DC
[Inside Bay Area > Political Blotter] CODEPINK cofounders Medea Benjamin of San Francisco and Jodie Evans of Venice, Calif., later Tuesday were detained by Capitol Police after interrupting a Senate Foreign Relations Committee nomination hearing for John Deputy Secretary of State nominee John Negroponte; they’d stood up and spoke out in objection to Negroponte’s alleged tolerance of Honduran death squads during his term as the U.S. Ambassador to that Central American nation from 1981 to 1985.

RINO Specter declares decider shared and joint responsibility
[ Conservative Thoughts] No one challenges the notion that Congress can stop a war by canceling its funding. In fact, Vice President Dick Cheney challenged Congress to back up its objections to Bush’s plan to put 21,500 more troops in Iraq by zeroing out the war budget.

Davos Video Gold Rush
[lgf: democracy. it's a beautiful thing.] Given the tendency of attendees at Davos to have attacks of foot-in-mouth disease, I think I’ll have a closer look at all these lovely videos the World Economic Forum has made available: World Economic Forum - Podcasts and Webcasts.

The Big Issue on the Table
[ Peace and Freedom] Oh, and my friend in Texas has also mentioned that he believes we should string up some of the politicians that are voicing opposition to the president. But hes a little to the right of me.

Permanent Link to More on that Webby Poll
[Macsmind - Conservative Commentary and Common Sense] “Only 35 percent of the military members polled this year said they approve of the way President Bush is handling the war, while 42 percent said they disapproved. Yet Another Reason
["On Topic" With Doug Krile] Make that insanity”¦ Lets take a look at this surge by the numbers. The Army acknowledged last week, for example, that it is still 22 percent short of the armored Humvees it needs in Iraq despite heated criticism in 2004 and 2005 over the lack of armored vehicles.

Ledeen Blows It Out
[Daily Pundit] We refused to see it, we deliberately and systematically blinded ourselves to it, and this “we” encompasses them all, president and vice president, national security advisers, secretaries of defense and state and their top aides (can anyone forget the incredible claim from Powells Deputy, Richard Armitage-the man who outed Valerie Plame to Robert Novack and then clammed up about it, thereby sending Judy Miller to prison and Scooter Libby to trial”that “Iran is a democracy,” and his public announcement that the Iranians would soon turn over top al Qaeda terrorists to our criminal justice system?), and the Intelligence (sic) Community.

O'Reilly: '[T]he media now have a vested interest in America's failure'...
[Conservative Blog Therapy] Brokaw is certainly entitled to his opinion on the Wild West front, I can only wonder what the anti-Bush press would have said if the USA had not handed Saddam over to the Iraqis. The likely headline would have been something like: "Bush Insults the Iraqi Justice System." The articles and punditry would have emphasized that America was usurping Iraqi authority. And Mark Alexander asks...

“Baghdad is dying”
[One Utah] From CNN correspondent Arwa Damon in Baghdad: “Baghdad is dying, we are all just waiting in line.” Khaled ” not his real name to protect his life ” one of our Iraqi employees, said the words softy, his eyes glossing over. It was during a conversation with our Bureau Chief Cal Perry, talking about work in the bureau, and I was helping out translating.

Hitting Reverse A Little Early
[Captain's Quarters] With just a few hours left before George Bush delivers his speech on the shift in Iraq war policy, politicians have already queued up to declare themselves in support or opposition to the plan. Unsurprisingly, most Democrats oppose it, but a few Republicans have joined them.

Duck pit lovers unite
[B12 Partners Solipsism] When we later saw the whole square where the statue was located, only 30 to 40 people were there (U.S. soldiers, press and some Iraqis -- and one of several U.S. tanks present pulled the statue down with a cable). We, the television viewers, saw the square being presented as though the people of Iraq had gone into a frenzy, mobbed the square and spontaneously pulled down the statue.

Fineman skeptical on Dems withholding funds
[The Political Chase - TPC] Fineman seemed to believe the pending Congressional hearings would further bolster public opinion against the war and consequentially motivate/force Bush to pursue other options. Who knows, Fineman may be right about what the Dems may or may not do, but I believe he is dead wrong that public opinion will have any effect on Bush's policy in Iraq.
