Deliberating On Mistakes
[Big Lizards:Blog:Main] But if the mistranslation were deliberate, rewriting the official statements of Iraqi officials to hew more closely to what CNN would prefer they said, then -- well, then that's just the traditional MO of the mainstream media, isn't it?

Haditha massacre update - shots fired from only a couple of rifles?
[Sir Humphrey's | The Department of Unspin] Officials briefed on preliminary results of the inquiry said the civilians killed at Haditha, a lawless, insurgent-plagued city deep in Sunni-dominated Anbar Province, did not die from a makeshift bomb, as the military first reported, or in cross-fire between marines and attackers, as was later announced. A separate inquiry has begun to find whether the events were deliberately covered up.

When will we ever learn?
[The ZenYenta Report] In these days when terms like "collateral damage" have entered the common vernacular it would be too easy to do. Rightwing blogs, some of which are still trying to find ways to blame Congressman Murtha for speaking on the subject, are quickly moving over to this talking point.

Jean Rohe: Why I Spoke Up
[The Huffington Post] When I was selected as a student speaker for the New School commencement about two months ago I had no idea that I'd end up on CNN and in Maureen Dowd's column in the New York Times, among other places, when it was all over. One day after the big event I'm still reeling from all the media attention and emails from professors, students, and other supporters from all over the country, so forgive me if my writing is a little scattered.

[Hammer of Truth | Libertarian Community Weblog] I’ve been enjoying the writings of Jeremiah Bullfrog (who incidentally looks like Shepard Smith with a moustache and mullet). He writes funny tongue-in-cheek renditions of a Southern yokel political views laced with links to the flip side of the coin.

Carter was a visionary
[Blog and Tan] In the current environment of multiple wars, possibly including future one(s) against Iran and maybe even Syria, it is no secret to anyone that we are too dependent on foreign oil. Even Bush admits we're "addicted to oil." Note that I've suggested instead that we're addicted to what oil has provided us for generations--cheap transportation, and therefore the flexibility to consume real estate--but that's beside the point.

Iraqi civilian deaths on the rise
[political nonsense] Gunmen operate throughout Baghdad ” killing brazenly during daytime and moving with impunity during curfew. Because there is rarely any proper investigation of the deaths by either U.S. or Iraqi authorities, it is all but impossible to determine to what extent the killers are motivated by sectarian feuds or by revenge, money or tribal quarrels.
