31/8 in Iraq

[Baghdad Dweller] People of Iraq from all faiths quickly gathered to help and show solidarity. Most notably, the heroic people of Falluja, themselves losing thousands in the American bombardment of their 300,000 city not so long ago, gathered to donate blood and support the victims of the bridge.

It’s About Oil Now?

[The Republic of T.] I’ve written here before about the connection between oil (and our consumption of it) and the war in Iraq, and how generally people stop listening when anyone suggests a relationship between the two. But will that be the reaction now that Bush has said oil is yet another reason for the war in Iraq?

Real War Reporting

Brain-Terminal.comhttp://brain-terminal.com/posts [Brain-Terminal.com] Many have grown bored with the predictable reporting from the establishment media. It's simply a running count of deaths--unless, of course, it's the enemy that dies, in which case you never hear about it.

The Slow Trickle of Truth

[Dr. Forbush Thinks] Even though the truth about the build up to the Iraq War has been out in public for years now, this evidence isn’t accepted as the truth among those who continue to support the President’s vision of pre-emptive invasion. This is because the American people in general put trust in our nation’s leader to defend the United States of America and to uphold the Constitution.

Why the Right Just Doesn’t Get the Cindy Sheehan Story

[Clean Cut Kid] Sheehan has simply been more effective at capturing the attention of America than anyone up to this point because she has a highly compelling but simple-to-understand story. She captured the attention of the anti-war crowd, not the other way around.

Tragic

[Schadenfreude] In what has to be one of the saddest stories coming out of Iraq, 19 Marines from the same Battalion were killed over the last few days...5 by sniper fire on Monday, and 14 from a car bomb on Wednesday. The sorrow in Brook Park, a Cleveland suburb of 21,000 people, was painfully clear Wednesday among the line of customers sipping their morning coffee at the counter of a doughnut shop down the street from the battalion's headquarters.

The Rise of the Religious Right in Iraq

MarteyDodoo.comhttp://www.marteydodoo.com [MarteyDodoo.com] Vincent wrote about the influence that Shi’ite religious groups had on the police and other governmental organizations in Basra, part of the British sector in southern Iraq. Interestingly, the BBC News article covering his death glosses over one of the primary points of his op-ed - that while the British were doing an adequate job in training the Basra police to combat insurgency, they were failing to teach them any respect for human rights or liberal democracy.

CIA Trained Scorpions Do "the dirty work" in Iraq

[Economist's View] That I am no longer surprised by stories like this, that I wondered if it was worth posting tells me just how far we've slid down the slippery slope where the ends justify the means. We spent millions of dollars to train the Scorpions, an Iraqi paramilitary group, to aid in the initial war effort.

The Ratline Manual

http://billroggio.com [The Fourth Rail] There is a contradictory warning to not carry too much money, while exhorting them to bring money for their brethren in Iraq. For example the statement "It is recommended to enter the city using a car and do not carry large sums of money" is followed by "do not forget to bring some money with you for your mujahideen brothers in Iraq, especially on your second visit”¦ I have heard that one of our mujahideen brothers in Iraq was forced to sell his weapon in order to raise some money."
