Iraq: Over 700 Die in Stampede From Suicide Bomber Scare

[The Political Teen] BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Nearly 700 Iraqi Shi’ites died in a stampede over a Baghdad bridge provoked by rumors of a suicide bomber on Wednesday, and an official said the death toll was expected to reach 1,000.

[The Fourth Rail] al Qaeda is fighting hard to maintain its lines of communication along the Euphrates River, and the Qaim region is vital to keeping the ratline open, as it sits on the Syrian border. Combat in Qaim, the Coalition occupation of the vital Sunni cities of Ramadi, Hit and Fallujah, as well as the establishment of bases in Rawah and at Haditha Dam, are placing pressure on the insurgency, forcing them to commit resources to fight in what used to be their safe havens.

[Baghdad Dweller] People of Iraq from all faiths quickly gathered to help and show solidarity. Most notably, the heroic people of Falluja, themselves losing thousands in the American bombardment of their 300,000 city not so long ago, gathered to donate blood and support the victims of the bridge.

Tragic

[Schadenfreude] In what has to be one of the saddest stories coming out of Iraq, 19 Marines from the same Battalion were killed over the last few days...5 by sniper fire on Monday, and 14 from a car bomb on Wednesday. The sorrow in Brook Park, a Cleveland suburb of 21,000 people, was painfully clear Wednesday among the line of customers sipping their morning coffee at the counter of a doughnut shop down the street from the battalion's headquarters.

The Rise of the Religious Right in Iraq

[MarteyDodoo.com] Vincent wrote about the influence that Shi’ite religious groups had on the police and other governmental organizations in Basra, part of the British sector in southern Iraq. Interestingly, the BBC News article covering his death glosses over one of the primary points of his op-ed - that while the British were doing an adequate job in training the Basra police to combat insurgency, they were failing to teach them any respect for human rights or liberal democracy.
